Arriving at the platform might lead to missing the train for you. - Some ICE trains take off ahead of schedule.

An intriguing case: Train ICE 1659 traveling from Frankfurt to Erfurt. Typically, this train is thronged with passengers, being the final link between Germany's financial capital and Thuringia. But on the Thursday prior to Pentecost, the ICE 1659 is eerily vacant. Barely more than 15 guests populate its seven carriages.

The explanation behind the phantom train from Frankfurt

A rail aficionado from Berlin shares the reality. He asserts that construction works are the primary cause. If you miss your train in Frankfurt, it's due to a detour that adds 50 minutes to the journey—thus ensuring the ICE 1659 reaches Fulda punctually!

Sparfox's pro tip for all travelers: It appears, not only is the train frequently tardy, but your train might now leave too promptly! Fret not: If you fail to catch your pre-booked ICE train because of this, you can board any other train, as your connection is discontinued even if it leaves earlier (than what's displayed on the ticket). Consult the latest updates regarding your itinerary in the Bahn app!

Did you know? In "construction site" areas, Deutsche Bahn revokes train commitments right after you've reserved your seat—not just on the day of travel.

The phantom ICE 1659 reaches Fulda on time after a prolonged journey via the detour. However, only a few passengers are there who possess tickets for connections to Bad Hersfeld, Eisenach, or Erfurt. Just them, in fact, are making the journey.

Hence, the ICE 1659 maintains its ghostly status throughout the trip. Reports suggest this occurrence is increasingly prevalent due to construction works. Even Scottish football fans have taken notice! Paul Goodwin, co-founder of the Scottish Football Supporters Association, cautions: "Be sure to catch the earlier train. Leave the pub a bit earlier, provide more travel time."

Other railway clients have also been privy to earlier departures. Bahn made a brief remark concerning the phantom ICE: "It was bookable. Thus, it wasn't a vacant run."

Deutsche Bahn, indirectly, admits that a few hundred of the 930 daily trains depart earlier due to construction projects: The new trip duration is subsequently programmed into their data systems. However, Deutsche Bahn claims that numerous construction sites will be disabled by the European Championships.
