Soloviev Group prepares to light up Manhattan's East Side, eyes new casino

The Soloviev Group is preparing to build an integrated casino resort on about six acres of undeveloped land on Manhattan's East Side, south of the United Nations. At the same time, Soloviev is planning a public art installation called "Light Field on Liberty Square."

The Soloviev Group is controlled by billionaire Stefan Soloviev, son of the late Sheldon Solow, who died in 2020, estimated Net worth exceeds $4 billion. Soloviev chose to use the original spelling of his surname.

In 2000, Soloviev's father purchased six acres of undeveloped land between 38th and 41st streets east of First Avenue from United Education Group for about $600 million. The purchase included a further three hectares of land, which has now been sold and developed.

Soloviev partnered with Mohegan, a gambling and hotel entity controlled by the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, to realize his New York casino dream. Plans for a development called Liberty Plaza unveiled earlier this year call for a casino at the heart of the hotel, a 1,000-room hotel, two residential towers and a massive Ferris wheel overlooking the East River.

Soloviev is one of many prospective applicants for three gaming franchises in New York state. Other high-profile companies expected to submit proposals include Las Vegas Sands, MGM Resorts, Genting Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, Wynn Resorts and Hard Rock International.

Lighting Demonstration

Casino aspirants in southern New York are trying to sweeten their deal by showing that if they had a license, they would be strong community partners and benefit the areas where they operate.

In Coney Island, for example, the group spent $3 billion buying new basketball uniforms and T-shirts for youth players on the Brooklyn USA Basketball team. The Sands hosted a youth soccer clinic on Long Island where soccer superstars David Beckham and Carli Lloyd showed off their skills.

The Soloviev Group hopes to bring a public art installation to the property during the casino application process to signal its intent to improve the East Side of Roosevelt Avenue. Soloviev commissioned internationally renowned artist Bruce Munro, known for his immersive site-specific art installations, to design the light field in Liberty Square.

To "honor the enduring spirit of New York," Soloviev recently unveiled concept renderings of a public art space that would be free and open to guests and "provide meaningful opportunities for community engagement and educational programming."

"The light field in Liberty Square represents boundless imagination and the freedom to dream." "I hope it warms hearts and inspires young and old to create something of their own and pass it on to others," Munro said in a press release Zhong said.

Munro previously worked at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, where in 2010 he joined a group of invited artists to “imagine them in the inspiring Frank Lloyd Wright-designed rotunda.” Dream Intervention”.

Artistic Details

Liberty Square's "light field" will consist of approximately 17,000 dimly lit fiberglass spheres, creating "a painted landscape of the city's iconic skyline and East River waterfront."

The art space is scheduled to open this winter and remain open for 12 months. The art project is expected to cost $1.5 million, with Soloviev funding the program through the Soloviev Foundation.
