Solaire North Casino Forbidden for Government Employees in Quezon City by Mayor
Quezon City's Mayor, Joy Belmonte, made a crucial announcement this Monday, stating that city employees will be banned from accessing the newly opened Solaire Resort North casino.
Solaire Resort North, a $1 billion investment from Bloomberry Resorts, is set to open its doors this Saturday, featuring a 38-story hotel, a four-story casino with nearly 2,700 slot machines, and 163 live dealer table games. The establishment aims to attract VIPs and affluent customers from the northern region by offering a convenient gaming option near their homes.
In an attempt to prevent local government workers from entering the casino, Belmonte has collaborated with Bloomberry on a special program. Although these workers can access the resort's other facilities such as the hotel, restaurants, bars, and non-gaming entertainment, no gambling will be permitted.
Solaire North has set up an electronic database of photos for every one of the city's 19,000 employees. This system will help casino security to identify and restrict access to excluded individuals. The mayor explained, "Even if one wears a wig, mask, or hat, one's face can still be detected using a very sophisticated system."
Unlike some Asian countries that restrict residents from entering casinos, the Philippines doesn't have such policies. However, there are growing concerns that the country's expanding legal gaming industry might increase the number of problem gamblers.
The conference where Belmonte announced the city worker ban was organized by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the organization responsible for regulating commercial casinos and operating government-owned gaming properties under the Casino Filipino brand. The event aimed to bring together industry stakeholders, lawmakers, behavioral health experts, and the public and discuss better ways to implement responsible gambling practices.
Aside from Solaire Entertainment City and Solaire North, Bloomberry owns and operates Jeju Sun Hotel & Casino in South Korea. In early 2019, the company disclosed its intention to sell its Korean holding, but emphasized that no sale was imminent at that time.
Gaming experts anticipate that Solaire North would contribute approximately 9% to Bloomberry's 2024 GGR and over 14% in 2025 when the casino is operational all year round. Bloomberry is owned and managed by Filipino billionaire Enrique Razon Jr., the global port and shipping entrepreneur behind International Container Terminal Services. As per Forbes, his net worth is approximately $10.5 billion.
