Skyrocketing illicit gambling activities noted in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Unlawful Gambling Surges in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Gambling activities in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are allegedly shifting towards illegality, as per a report in the Nordkurier. Online gambling is notably impacted. Last year, authorities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern identified a staggering 99 unlicensed gambling operators.

Compared to the past five years, when there were around five instances of illegal online gambling, this is quite a significant rise. In 2020, there were no reported cases in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

An official from the LKA confirmed that authorities were able to identify participants in illegal gambling through suspicious financial transactions. Banks had lodged a report, leading to legal proceedings against these companies.

Regions of Rostock and Mecklenburgische Seenplatte bearing the Brunt

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's regions of Rostock and Mecklenburgische Seenplatte appear to be the most affected by illegal gambling, according to Daniel Peters, chairman of the CDU state parliamentary group. He added that the number of cases has doubled in some areas, stating:

The real extent is likely much larger. [...] The growing regulatory stringency of legal gambling has given a significant boost to illegal gambling. I highly doubt that Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is exempt from this trend. Daniel Peters, Chair of the CDU State Parliamentary Group, Nordkurier*

Individuals eager to engage in legal gambling in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can soon pay a visit to the new Landestreffen Rostock. Set to open later this year, this is expected to be the largest legal casino in the federal state.

Landestreffen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has invested around 4 million euros in constructing the new casino. The Landestreffen Rostock will span over 1,200 square meters and offer a variety of games, including slot machines, roulette, blackjack, and poker.

Before the new facility in Rostock opens, gambling enthusiasts can also visit other legal casinos in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, such as those in Stralsund, Neubrandenburg, and Schwerin.

Unlawful Gambling Affects Land-Based Providers as Well

Illegal gambling in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is not only prevalent in online casinos but also in land-based providers. Unlawful poker games in hidden rooms seem to be on the rise. However, legal gambling is currently permitted at 162 gaming hall providers with a GGL license and a connection to the OASIS player blocking system. Furthermore, over 200 catering establishments provide legal slot machine games.

Whether Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's authorities will implement new strategies to combat illegal gambling remains to be seen. It is expected that gambling inspections will be stepped up in MV in the near future.

Given the surge in unlawful gambling in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, particularly in online casinos, it's crucial for responsible authorities to take actions. Despite the upcoming opening of the largest legal casino in Rostock, online platforms like ['online casinos Germany'] operate without a license in the region, contributing to the increased illegal activities.
