Combating Hatred - Show of support for Israel outside Humboldt University
A week ago, there was an unexpected protest against Israel in the courtyard of honor, with provocative chants and 38 arrests. This Friday, a peaceful counter-protest took place. The "Fridays for Israel" coalition organized the event. As before, there was a significant police presence to shield the demonstrators from potential attacks.
A co-organizer, Tim Gräfe (31), is currently studying law in Potsdam. He fears that anti-Semitic groups will soon take control at German universities. "I'm concerned that it could escalate to the level seen in the United States."
Ekaterina (27), a medical student at Humboldt University, believes that their Jewish classmates deserve recognition and protection. "We want to show our Jewish peers that we recognize and protect them." She remains hopeful despite the situation: "Fear won't help us!"
One of the speakers at the rally stated, "The spread of demands for destroying Israel at schools is unacceptable. Hatred, incitement, and fantasies of annihilation make dialogue and research impossible."
Volker Beck (63), a Green Party politician, affirmed, "We are defending the university as a haven for intellectual debate and academic dispute - against those who aim to destroy this space through violence and intimidation. We will not tolerate it!"
The Israel-haters are not fixated on the war in Gaza. "It's about fostering division and demonizing - anti-Semitism is always an effective tool for that."
