According to various reports, such as the Daily Mail, McIlroy submitted divorce papers in Palm Beach County, Florida, USA on Monday. The reason: "irreparable breakdown" of the marriage.
McIlroy's PR team confirmed this news in a statement on Tuesday, but the golf pro himself did not wish to speak about it personally.
This four-time major winner and the American first met at the Ryder Cup in 2012, but only started dating two years later. An intriguing detail: at the time, McIlroy was still in a relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki (33) and even engaged. In 2014, he broke off the engagement without warning and began dating Stoll.
McIlroy spoke of falling for Stoll in 2019: "Erica was always the one checking us in and out during Ryder Cup week. She was there for transportation, so she was always in the parking lot by the clubhouse."
