Managing Money Matters - Seventeen towns and one city will eliminate their former East Germany housing debt in 2024.

Out of the 300 towns and municipalities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern seeking assistance to cover housing debts leftover from the GDR era, 18 are set to receive a combined €25 million in aid this year. The state has been providing financial aid through a joint fund created with local authorities since 2020, according to a statement made by the Ministry of the Interior in Schwerin on Wednesday. MV is the only federal state with such a program. This would allow the full payment of accumulated housing debts. The ministry estimates that there are around €168.5 million in GDR-era housing construction debts owed to local governments throughout the state. Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) expresses optimism that these debts will be completely paid off by 2030.
