Selling Las Vegas dignity for sports revenue: Opinion

Some of Las Vegas' preparations for hosting new sporting events have come at the expense of its dignity.

Las Vegas casino resorts have been surrounded by advertising before. For much of the 11 years that Donny and Marie Osmond have been the headliners of the Flamingo Hotel, their 10-foot-long eyes have covered the casino resort's front facing the Las Vegas Strip. There was glitter under the sheets all over one side.

It is understood that the Mirage Hotel has been incorrectly dubbed the "Beatles Hotel" since 2006 because of advertisements for Cirque du Soleil shows on its outer shell. A giant, Penn & Teller, covered the Rio for 15 years until it was torn down for building renovations last September.

But the new slides are different. It transforms one of the four sides of the MGM Resorts Luxor into a 350-foot-long Dorito. The other side of the pyramid advertises Michelob Ultra beer.

"Luxorito" was built at Allegiant Stadium just before Super Bowl 8, so it features prominently in hundreds of photos of the Las Vegas Strip as the first major architectural shell, Its advertising content was not part of the casino resort it was.

It heralds a new era in which Las Vegas' unique architecture will be packaged by the nacho manufacturer that bids the highest price.

As a Vegas purist, this is just a bridge too far," David Hookstead wrote in a column for outkick.com."Who signed this and why? What is the goal? The obvious answer is that someone at Doritos wrote an absolutely huge check to MGM. But is it worth being such a sad joke? "

Next, prime Delano land fell under the PepsiCo umbrella.

While the wrap is easy to remove, reversing another Las Vegas icon's ill-timed Super Bowl switch will take weeks to complete.

Angry as a Mountain

Paramount Global has closed, drained and partially dismantled Phantom Volcano to build "Paramount Mountain," which will reportedly feature an "interactive fan experience" and promote what the company's streaming channel will offer TV show.

The timing of this move couldn't be worse. The volcano is one of the last truly rare free attractions in Las Vegas, and has been on the rise ever since the resort's new owners, the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas, announced plans last March to tear down the hotel and replace it with a new one. It attracts nostalgic tourists. Guitar shaped hotel tower.

Will you be in Las Vegas for the last time to see a volcano show? Yes, no. There won’t be another outbreak until mid-February, and who knows how long that will last?

When MGM Resorts built grandstands in front of the Bellagio Hotel to host the first Formula 1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas, up to 40 trees, some of them in front of the dunes, were cut down and removed. In turn, blocking the view of spectators and obstructing the sidewalks, many wondered, there might be a worse feeling in the stomach for fans leaving Las Vegas.

Unfortunately, they found out.

The beloved, soon-to-be-demolished Phantom Volcano underwent a week-long transformation during the Super Bowl, turning into a prop to promote the streaming network.
