SEGA, renowned maker of immersive gaming experiences, broadens its free-to-play casino offering.
SEGA, a game developer, has stepped up its presence in the social casino market. They're rolling out popular brands as free-to-play slot machine games for smartphones. The "Sega Slots" app has been available for a while now, featuring new content.
Eight slot games based on cult products from SEGA are now included in the app: Sonic, Shinobi, Super Monkey Ball, and Golden Axe. While the gameplay is familiar - 5-reel slots with variable stakes and bonus rounds - there's not much of the actual action-packed content of SEGA's games like jump'n'run interludes. However, some machines do feature a multiplayer function.
Players use a virtual currency to play, starting with a free amount that can be increased through game winnings and in-app purchases. So far, the app has been downloaded over 100,000 times from Google's Playstore, with mostly positive reviews. However, some players criticize the leveling system, complaining it's nearly impossible to avoid buying extra coins to unlock more games due to unrealistic requirements, as otherwise all coins will be used up by minimum bets.
SEGA has acknowledged these complaints and plans to continuously update the app. This could potentially lead to improvements in the gameplay, but the company has an interest in selling coins, so it's unclear how much will change. The app isn't SEGA's first venture into mobile gaming. They've been offering 3D games for smartphones and tablets for several years. SEGA also has some gaming experience, albeit somewhat outdated. The company dates back to the '50s in Japan as an importer and manufacturer of gaming machines. They say their connection to their own history was the motivation to enter the social casino sector.
