Security Guard at a Peru Casino Injured in Robbery Attack
A man's life hangs in the balance after he attempted to stop a gang of thieves on a Wednesday afternoon as they fled the scene of a casino robbery in Puente Piedra, Peru. Herless Saldívar Cieza, serving as a night security guard in the region, was struck in the face and abdomen by the fleeing robbers as they sought to escape.
Saldívar and a number of other guards hurried to the unnamed casino following a phone call alerting them to the theft in progress. Two customers managed to leave prior to the incident, notifying a security patrol car.
Before the bandits managed to leave, one of them got out of the vehicle and fired a pistol at the approaching guards. Saldívar and his crew were met with several shots, leaving him injured with a bullet piercing one of his cheekbones.
Near-Death Encounter
The 34-year-old victim was promptly hospitalized. At first, it was believed that the bullet which struck him had simply gone through his body. Medical practitioners later discovered, through X-rays, that the bullet was lodged in his neck's backside area.
On Thursday morning, Saldívar was transferred to a trauma hospital, where doctors were readying themselves to perform surgery. No information has been provided regarding his current status.
Law enforcement officials in Puente Piedra have only managed to arrest one suspect involved in the crime. The local police force is hoping that the National Police, aided by surveillance footage and witness testimonies, will capture the remaining perpetrators.
A similarly distressing situation unfolded in the city of Surco a few months ago. Night watchman Luis Manrique was fatally shot by a criminal during the commission of a robbery. The incident evoked outrage amongst civilians and politicians; however, it did not result in any significant actions to protect night watchmen.
Arm the Watchmen
Night watchmen in Peru walk the streets, watching over certain areas and collaborating with law enforcement. They possess no official authority and may only carry non-lethal weapons.
According to Luis Pacheco, the municipal manager of Puente Piedra, the watchmen need to be armed with guns. This suggestion entails comprehensive training and assessment.
It is impossible for law enforcement to be present everywhere. Watchmen, who work both day and night shifts, fill the gaps, regularly monitoring neighborhoods and districts. They are valuable assets, as Peru's depleted police force continues to deal with ongoing riots and protests that began in December.
The same day Saldívar and his fellow guards attempted to halt the casino robbery, another group of watchmen interfered to save an 18-year-old woman from being kidnapped in the Los Olivos district, situated just north of Lima.
Initial reports stated that the unidentified woman was about to be abducted by individuals who had previously stolen her cell phone. As the suspects attempted to force her into a car, the watchmen intervened and arrested the perpetrators.
