The administration is taking action. - Schwesig emphasizes mutually agreed salaries and family-friendly workplaces.
The premier of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwesig from the SPD, advocated for increased collectively agreed wages during her May Day speech in Torgelow on Wednesday. "Wages from collective agreements are always higher than those without such agreements," Schwesig explained before the event, according to an early press release.
Mecklenburg-Vorpomberg has a below-average number of employees covered by sector or company-specific collective agreements. Statistically, the state faced 84.4% of the German average national wage per person in 2020, compared to 84.6% in the year prior - placing it last among other German states, as calculated by the State Statistical Office.
Schwesig related to the existing legislation regarding collective bargaining and public procurement. "Anybody in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern who seeks a public contract from the government or municipal bodies must ensure to pay their employees a minimum of the region's collective wage or an equivalent wage", she shared. Furthermore, she expressed her support for the state's attention to family-friendly working conditions. Such measures are imperative, Schwesig claimed, as they help lure and retain skilled professionals.
