Last-minute confession during the farewell - Schalke's pressure has affected Terodde.
With a 4-0 victory against Osnabrück on Tuesday in the catch-up match, Schalke secured relegation and then beat Hansa 2-1, softening their dismal season a bit.
Rostock, in crisis mode after dismissing manager Walter during the week, is facingrelegation to the third division this Sunday after their fifth consecutive loss. If Wiesbaden wins in Braunschweig, Hansa will suffer the same fate.
"The result is extremely disappointing," commented coach Mersad Selimbegovic (42). "It's no longer in our hands; we can only hope we have a chance."
Emotions ran high at the arena before the match. 60,000 Schalke supporters bid farewell to club legend Gerald Asamoah (45), who was parting ways with the club as head of the licensed player department. Danny Latza (34) and team captain Simon Terodde (36) were also retiring from the club.
"It's the right time to stop. I couldn't handle another season with the tiring preseason and all the pressure at Schalke, particularly at home games," said second division's all-time top scorer Terodde (177 goals).
The match was a chaotic and stressful affair.
► Karaman scores to make it 1-0 (22'): He heads in an Ouwejan corner into the net. It's his 13th goal of the season!
► Cisse falls to the floor under Pröger's challenge, prompting goalkeeper Müller to run angrily almost to the halfway line (25'). A massive brawl ensues, and both players receive a yellow card.
► Singh levels the score at 1-1 (32'): His shot deflects off Schallenberg - it's a mistake by Müller.
► Schalke's 2-1 (45.+5) is a clear error by Hansa keeper Kolke. He fails to reach Seguin's cross, which then rolls straight into the goal.
A Rostock player is at fault for the ruling. Goalscorer Singh kicks Ouédraogo hard in the heel (70'). Referee Reichel consults the monitor - and displays a red card. With just ten men left, Rostock stumbles towards the third division...
Before the game, rioting broke out. Hundreds of violent Schalke and Rostock fans gathered in Gelsenkirchen's Nordsternpark on Saturday morning and got into fights.
