You wouldn't believe it! - Sarr identified the most crucial Bayern staff member.
Before the kick-off of Munich's final Bundesliga home game of the season on Sunday against VfL Wolfsburg (2:0), Bouna Sarr (32) was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a framed jersey, as expected by sporting director Max Eberl (50) and sporting director Christoph Freund (46). The contract of the Senegalese full-back, who joined the German record champions from Olympique Marseille for eight million euros in October 2020, expires on June 30, and it will not be extended.
This parting was a hot topic among fans at the Allianz Arena. However, Sarr never played a significant role on the team at Säbener Straße!
Despite the setbacks, the 2022 African champion found something positive - a close, friendly relationship with a colleague he might have had less connection with if not for the numerous injuries.
The context: In 2021/22, Sarr collaborated primarily with Martinello during his comeback from patellar tendon issues, which required about two months' absence, and after knee surgery the following season, causing a four-month layoff. He also suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in December 2023, from which he's just recently returned to team training. Although the South Tyrolean often pushed him hard, the soon-to-be ex-Bayern player expresses gratitude to him, stating: "Simon provided me with a lot of support, and I'm very thankful for that."
The same friendly sentiments extend to his teammates, as well. "The entire team was a great help; they're like a big family and have always supported me," Sarr gushes.
Sarr's verdict for his four-year stint as a Bayern reserve is cheerful. "I'll never forget my time at Bayern and can only thank everyone at the club. And for this touching farewell."
What comes after June 30 for him? Sarr replies: "I'm open to anything - a return to France, but also a fresh experience in another country. I haven't made a decision yet."
