San Jose illegal casino raid leads to 10 arrests
Ten suspects were arrested last week in San Jose, California, after local police raided an illegal gambling establishment, authorities announced Monday.
During an early morning raid last Thursday, police found 34 people at a residence in the 2800 block of Garden Avenue. They were arrested by local police.
Three suspects are said to have led the operation. They are Thuy Pham (51 years old), Xuan Nguyen (46 years old) and Vu Nguyen (37 years old). Both live in San Jose. The three men were charged with multiple offenses involving firearms, drug trafficking, conspiracy, running and operating a drug house and operating an illegal gambling establishment.
All three are being held at the Santa Clara County Main Jail. They appear to have been released, according to online jail records.
Initially, Pham and Xuan Nguyen were arrested after they were found hiding in a small space of their residence. Seven other unnamed suspects who were at the home during the raid have been charged with felonies and misdemeanors. Police did not disclose what charges were included in the outstanding warrant.
According to police, the property was a front for illegal gambling and other criminal activities, including drug sales.
Meth, Slot Machine Found
During the search, police seized nine slot machines, $2,075 in cash, multiple narcotic tubes and approximately 44.1 grams of suspected amphetamine (methamphetamine).
Two firearms were also seized, including a stolen handgun that had been converted into a fully automatic submachine gun, according to San Jose police. A second gun, ammunition and a loaded high-capacity magazine were also seized from the residence.
The raid followed a months-long investigation by the San Jose Police Department's Street Crimes Unit, which determined various criminal activity was occurring at the residence.
Officials say they often rely on tips from local residents to identify illegal gambling dens. Completing these operations remains a priority for police.
Previous gambling robberies
In April, San Jose police raided seven underground casino networks. The court-authorized search seized about $300,000 in cash, about a dozen firearms and eight pounds of suspected cocaine and methamphetamine.
San Jose police previously conducted raids on other illegal gambling operations in the city. Many gambling dens are sites of drug dealing.
Illegal drugs are often seized during searches. In 2021, police uncovered more than 300 pounds of suspected marijuana with a street value of approximately $600,000 during a raid.
