San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy becomes MVP betting favorite

According to a recent update from DraftKings, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is the new betting favorite to win the NFL MVP at +300 odds.

The 49ers defeated the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13, and Purdy jumped to the top of the NFL prospect list after a near-perfect performance.

The 49ers are currently the consensus favorite to win Super Bowl 58 at +310 odds. The Eagles have the No. 2 spot on the NFL future roster, with +450 odds to win the Super Bowl.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was the favorite to win last year's MVP, but his odds dropped to +350 after the loss. Hurts is tied for second in MVP odds, while Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is listed at +350.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the reigning MVP. Mahomes has a +850 chance to win the prestigious award in back-to-back seasons and is on pace to win a third MVP trophy.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, the 2019 MVP winner, has a +900 chance to win his second MVP in five seasons.

Mr. Irrelevant: Purdy, MVP favorite

The 49ers selected Purdy with the seventh-round pick and No. 262 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The Iowa State quarterback was the last player selected in the draft, earning him the nickname "Mr. President." Every season doesn't matter. Purdy broke with tradition in one fell swoop and led the 49ers to five straight wins to end his rookie season.

Purdy begins the 2022 season as the third-string quarterback behind starter Trey Lance and backup Jimmy Garoppolo. In December, he took over as the starter after Lance and Garoppolo were sidelined due to injuries.

Purdy went 5-0 in his first five career starts before leading the 49ers to two playoff wins and a NFC Championship Game against the Eagles.

Disaster struck in the first quarter of the NFC Championship Game when Purdy injured his elbow. The 49ers also lost their backup quarterback to a concussion and had to finish the game without their quarterback. The Eagles defeated the 49ers 31-7 to advance to the Super Bowl.

When the 2023 NFL schedule is released, Week 13 will already be circled on the 49ers and Purdy calendars. They can't wait to take revenge on the eagle.

The 49ers defeated the Eagles 42-19 on the road, improving their season record to 9 wins and 3 losses. Purdy completed 19 of 27 passes for 314 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Oddsmakers have adjusted their MVP odds after the impressive win, with Purdy emerging as the new favorite at +300.

In 12 starts this season, Purdy leads the NFL with a 116.1 passer rating and a 75.6 QBR rating. He completed 70.2 percent of his passes for 3,185 yards. He has thrown for 23 touchdowns and six interceptions and scored two rushing touchdowns.

CMAC: Top running backs in the MVP race

There's an ongoing debate among 49ers fans in the Bay Area: How can Purdy be the MVP favorite when he's not even the best player on the team?

Dual-threat running back Christian McCaffrey has been a beast this season despite suffering from rib and oblique injuries. McCaffrey has 17 touchdowns in 12 games. He rushed 210 times for 1,032 yards and caught 51 passes for 429 yards.

McCaffrey is the running back with the best odds on the MVP board at +1,600. He tied for seventh overall.

Adrian Peterson, a former running back for the Minnesota Vikings, was the last non-quarterback to win the regular season MVP in 2012. Peterson is the only non-quarterback to win the MVP award since the 2007 season.

Cheetah: WR’s MVP Case

Across South Florida, you'll hear enthusiastic endorsements of MVP honors for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek "Cheetah" Hill. If any non-quarterback has a chance to win MVP, it's Hill who's having a magical season.

In 12 games this season, Hill has caught 93 passes for 1,481 yards and 12 touchdowns for a league-high 15.9 yards per catch. He also set the fastest pace of any player this season. In Week 5, he legitimately earned the nickname "The Cheetah" with a 64-yard touchdown rush that topped out at 22.01 mph. Hill’s MVP odds are the same as McCaffrey’s at +1,600. However, those numbers put the two candidates behind six quarterbacks, including Purdy, Hurts, Prescott, Mahomes and Jackson.

The last time a wide receiver came close to winning the MVP was the 1987 season, when 49ers legend Jerry Rice finished second in voting behind Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway Elway).

The 1987 MVP award was controversial because Rice had better numbers than Elway, with 65 catches for 1,078 yards and 23 touchdowns in just 12 games. Additionally, teammate Joe Montana was named first-team All-Quarterback and Elway was named second-team quarterback.
