Coach or personal instructor - Sabrina Wittmann guides FC Ingolstadt to its maiden cup victory.
Sabrina Wittmann has achieved a milestone by becoming the first female coach to lead a Bavarian men's team to victory in a state cup. On Saturday, she guided FC Ingolstadt to a 2-1 win over Würzburger Kickers. In the 25th minute, Saliou Sané, the regional champions, scored the opening goal. Sebastian Grönning equalized for Würzburg just before half-time. With less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Ryan Malone secured the win for the Schanzers. This was Ingolstadt's first-ever cup victory, having participated in three previous finals. Both teams were already pre-qualified for the DFB Cup round 1, with Würzburg gaining direct entry as regional league champions.
The hosts, Würzburger Kickers, played boldly and generated several opportunities. However, they struggled to score due to a combination of their own sloppiness and the heroics of the FC Ingolstadt goalkeeper, Marius Funk. Despite taking the lead, Ingolstadt seemed uninterested and were caught off guard by the equalizer.
As the match progressed, Ingolstadt displayed more intensity, resulting in a captivating encounter for the viewers. Opportunities arose for both teams. While Ingolstadt found their way past Funk, their opponents struggled to get past the formidable goalkeeper, resulting in their undoing. Würzburg's defeat might be a bit disappointing, but they have other priorities – they need to focus on their promotional-relegation matches against Hannover 96 II, scheduled for 29 May and 2 June.
