Opposing longstanding enemies Homburg - Saarbrücken charts a course for clinching the cup.
Saarbrücken's target in the DFB Cup has been easily achieved!
For 1. FC Saarbrücken, their focus now lies in meeting the required criteria - they need to qualify for the DFB Cup. This means they have to secure a victory against their regional league opponents, FC Homburg, this Saturday (11:45 AM).
Similarly, Homburg's promotion hopes were once again dashed as they ended up finishing in 5th place, just like Saarbrücken. However, there were some memorable moments in their DFB Cup journey. They defeated Bundesliga newcomers Darmstadt 98 3-0 in the first round and followed that up with a 2-1 win over Greuther Fürth from the 2nd division. Their journey, unfortunately, ended with a 1-4 defeat against St. Pauli, the 2nd division champions, and Bundesliga newcomers.
Both Saarland's surprise representatives are now striving for a spot in the DFB Cup. But only one can achieve it!
Saarbrücken's preparation is somewhat akin to a home game since the final will be held in Saarbrücken's Ludwigspark. Adjusting to the early start time of 11:45 AM can be somewhat challenging. Drinking pasta three hours prior can make one feel sluggish...
However, both teams need to prepare for the game to potentially go into extra time.
Saarbrücken's Marcel Gaus (34) is clear about what he hopes to accomplish in his "farewell game": "It's essential to give the club a chance to enjoy nights like the one against Bayern in the DFB Cup. And the only way to do that now is through the national cup. I've also told the guys that I've never held any trophy before and that's why I want to take home this one."
