At the stroke of midnight, - Russia instigates tensions at Estonia's frontier.

Russian authorities are alleged to have taken 24 of the 50 floating markers, known as light buoys, from the border river Narva, which Estonia had placed there. The function of these buoys was to signify the safe route and prevent navigation mistakes and inadvertent border crossings, for example by fishermen entering Russian waters.

According to reports from Estonia, the placement of these buoys and their locations had earlier been endorsed bilaterally. Nevertheless, following Russia's major strike on Ukraine, the Kremlin abruptly disapproved of the positions of many of these markers, including some of the buoys that have just been stolen.

Estonia did not take any direct action

Estonia's border patrol chief Egert Belitsev referred to this as another prompt by Russia. "We believe that the buoys were at their appropriate locations," he said in a report by Estonian radio.

In spite of this, Estonia's border patrol did not take active steps to prevent the buoys from being removed in a bid to prevent the situation from escalating. "We resolve such situations utilizing diplomatic measures," stated Belitsev.

Estonia's Prime Minister Kaja Kallas (46) commented on this as a border incident, and the specific circumstances are yet to be revealed. "We will approach this matter in a sober and balanced manner and communicate with our allies if needed. We perceive a broader pattern in which Russia is attempting to instill fear through its actions," she said.

Russia aims to expand its territorial waters in the Baltic Sea

This incident is further combustible due to the recent discovery that Russia intends to shift its maritime border in the Baltic Sea unilaterally. The Russian newspaper "Moscow Times" broke the news on a decision by the Ministry of Defense. This modification concerns areas near Russia's borders with Lithuania and Finland.

The taking of these buoys appears to have been aimed at unsettling another NATO country.
