Rookie QB Will Levis from the Tennessee Titans Anticipates Commencing in Week 8.
Two weeks ago, the Tennessee Titans were struck with a blow as their starting quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, suffered an ankle injury. This week, the rookie backup, Will Levis, is set to make his first NFL start against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 8. With the Titans having a bye week last week, all parties were hopeful that Tannehill might be ready for this game.
The Titans' season has been tumultuous so far, starting with a 2-2 record before going on a losing streak for two games. Half of the teams in their division, the AFC South, will be starting backup quarterbacks this week, including the Titans and the Indianapolis Colts. Gardner Minshew is stepping in for Anthony Richardson in Indy, who is out for the season due to shoulder surgery. Meanwhile, Trevor Lawrence from the Jacksonville Jaguars is battling a knee injury, though he hasn't missed any games yet.
In the Titans' match against the Baltimore Ravens in London, Tannehill was injured in the second half. He attempted to play on with the injury, but was taken out in the third quarter and carted off the field. Malik Willis completed the game for Tennessee, but the Titans lost to the Ravens, 24-16. An MRI scan conducted on Tannehill back in the United States revealed that he had sustained the same ankle injury as the one he had in 2022.
In the 2022 season, the Titans started strong with a 7-3 record before they went on to lose their next seven games. This ultimately led to their exclusion from the playoffs. Tannehill was unable to play for the final three games of the season due to his right ankle injury, which was partially responsible for the team's downward spiral.
While Willis made his debut the previous season, starting in Week 16 against the Houston Texans, the Titans failed to show improvement. In their last two games, they again turned to Josh Dobbs. Unfortunately, the Titans' slump continued, and they missed the playoffs.
As the Titans listed Tannehill as "questionable" on the injury report with a high ankle sprain, it seems unlikely that he'll return to action this week. Head coach Mike Vrabel hasn't named a starter yet, but both Willis and rookie Will Levis could see game time. If the rumors are true, it will be Levis who will make his debut on Sunday.
The Titans chose Levis in the 2023 draft's second round after having doubts about Willis, their 2022 pick from Liberty. Levis was the fourth quarterback taken in the 2023 draft but dropped to the second round despite being selected early. The Titans took him with the 33rd overall pick.
While Tannehill's performance hasn't been impressive this season with just two touchdowns and six interceptions, Levis could bring a new sense of energy to the offense. Having struggled with completing passes at 62%, Tannehill's rating with the Titans is below his 73% career record. Although the Titans are 3-3 against the spread this season, the Falcons have struggled, going 2-5 ATS. Betting against the Titans at home seems unusual, given their odds of +2.5 as underdogs.
Despite their difficult season so far, the Titans are still in playoff contention at +425 odds, and they are +700 odds to win the AFC South ahead of the Houston Texans. However, they have -600 odds to miss the playoffs for the second year in a row.
