Fuel types include oil, gas, and district heating. - Rising heating costs: Prices increase by up to 44%
Ista, a real estate service provider, conducted a study and found that heating costs have increased in 2023 compared to 2022. For district heating, the price per kilowatt hour climbed by an average of seven percent, for heating oil it went up by 34 percent, and for natural gas it surged by 44 percent. These calculations were made after analyzing around 800,000 heating bills.
The prices presented take into consideration the state price brakes for gas and district heating in 2023. Contrary to what people might expect, the average heating consumption in 2023 was actually lower than in 2022 due to cheaper heating at the start of the year and a mild winter. Still, heating expenses increased for many people: for a 70 square meter average apartment, district heating costs went up by two percent to 792 euros, natural gas amounted to 817 euros (a 37 percent increase), and heating oil rose by 30 percent, costing 1095 euros.
Ista's CEO, Hagen Lessing, mentioned that tenants will likely have to pay more for heating their homes in 2023. He also hinted at additional payments for gas and oil heating systems.
Contrary to these price increases, utility bills for 2024 could potentially drop. This is because the average prices for heating oil and gas have decreased at the beginning of the year despite the removal of the government price brakes. This has been found by the comparison portal Check24.
To be more specific, the average price of heating oil dropped by ten percent in January 2024 compared to January 2023. It decreased from €2319 to €2089 for 2000 liters of oil. Similarly, the average cost of gas dropped by 19 percent. In January 2023, it was €2682, while in January 2024, it shrank to €2185 for 20000 kWh (a decrease of €497).
