The Champions League competition is in progress. - Riedle draws a comparison between BVB and the 1997 championship squad.
Former international Karl-Heinz Riedle has noticed similarities between BVB's 1997 Champions League victory and the current squad. "The situation from back then can be likened to today," Riedle said in an interview with ran. He scored two goals in the final against Juventus Turin, helping BVB claim the title in the European Champions League 27 years ago.
"We miraculously made it past Manchester United in the semi-finals, despite losing rightfully," recalled the 58-year-old. "Luck played a major role in that. Coach Edin Terzic was right when he said, 'Once you're in the semifinals, it makes sense to fight for the final.'''
BVB is set to play against Paris Saint-Germain and star Kylian Mbappé in their own stadium on Wednesday, with Mbappé playing in his last game for PSG before his summer departure. If BVB manages to advance against PSG, a replay of the 2013 German final at Wembley Stadium, where they lost to Bayern Munich, could occur.
"It was a match between two equally strong teams, unfortunately with Bayern's team winning. But Dortmund wouldn't care who they'd face in a potential final. If they achieved that, it would be an incredible accomplishment," Riedle asserted.
However, Bayern also faces a difficult challenge next Wednesday at Real Madrid, having drawn 2-2 on Tuesday evening due to a late penalty in front of their home fans.
