Lawmakers experience physical confrontation at shopping mall - Revealing details on the assault against the AfD member.
Over the past week, an assault on AfD state legislator Mario Kumpf (38) from Ebersbach-Neugersdorf (Görlitz district) at the mall attracted attention.
Though the police and state protection agency were still in the early stages of their investigation, the AfD in Saxony was convinced that the offender was motivated by "politics" that very evening. However, it appears that things weren't at all what they seemed. Instead, it had nothing to do with politics but rather a parking space!
The conflict intensified on the parking lot
Last Wednesday, Kumpf was struck in the face by a man (53) in his hometown of Ebersbach. At first, the police claimed the attack took place in a local grocery store. The attacker had simply continued shopping and was apprehended by the police later on.
Prosecutor: "No politically motivated crime"
On Monday, State Prosecutor Christopher Gerhardi revealed, "Based on the latest information, a politically motivated crime is unlikely." The state protection agency had intervened only because their obligations required them to, as it involved a politician.
The Saxon AfD had suggested on Wednesday that Kumpf had been attacked because of his political activities. On X (formerly Twitter), the party wrote, "Our MP was attacked today in Ebersbach during an incident [...] every physical attack motivated by politics is one that's unacceptable."
Hush-up of the AfD politician's background
So far, neither the AfD nor Kumpf has provided any clarity. The former legislator simply reported dealing with headaches and jaw pain. "Physical attacks of this nature, whether politically motivated or not, don't align with our values of peaceful coexistence," said the politician.
Nobody should be concerned about their safety simply because they express an "uncomfortable" idea. It wasn't about him, either. Now, this AfD member wants to become mayor—and be straight with the people.
Lately, there have been countless instances of political attacks. For example, in Dresden, SPD Member of European Parliament Matthias Ecke (41) was assaulted while hanging up posters and made headlines all across Germany.
