Mallorca: Nightclub Collapses - Rescuers extract survivors from the debris.

A 23-year-old Spanish woman and a 44-year-old man from Senegal were tragically killed in a beach club collapse on Thursday evening. This incident occurred around 8:30 pm, at Palma's beach club, near popular party spots like "Mega-Park" and "Bierkönig".

Local resident Javier described the event to the regional newspaper "Última Hora", saying, "It collapsed like a house of cards." He added, "It sounded like a bomb." At the time, many people were dining in the restaurant area, which contained both a cocktail bar with live music, as reported by the media.

Stunned and horrified

Immediately after the collapse, emergency teams from the police, fire department, and Majorcan emergency services rushed to the scene. The surrounding pubs and residential buildings were evacuated due to the potential for further collapse, and the area was sealed off. These teams undertook a risky task: extracting injured and lifeless individuals from the rubble. But they faced the constant threat of additional parts or outbuildings collapsing.

The police repeatedly requested the crowd's silence to enable rescue teams to hear potential survivor's cries. They spent hours tending to the slightly injured, relatives of the victims, and those traumatized by the event.

Dangerous operation: Rescuers search for victims in the rubble of the collapsed restaurant

By early Friday morning, rescue efforts were ongoing, with emergency teams still diligently searching for any remaining victims beneath the debris. However, just before midnight, a police spokesperson stated with 90% certainty that no further victims remained under the rubble.

On Friday morning, the aftermath of the tragedy became clearer. The Spanish police confirmed that the two German fatalities were believed to be female tourists. Authorities reported that 16 people were injured and received medical treatment in various facilities across the island. Of these, seven were in critical condition while the remaining nine were severely injured, but not life-threatening. Two of the admitted patients at Son Llàtzer Hospital were Dutch men, two other women were also Dutch, aged 26, 27, and 28. Other Dutch casualties had already been released from the hospital. A 35-year-old Dutch man, at Palmaplanas clinic, was reported as being stable and not in grave danger.

Without interruption, emergency services pulled the injured out of the rubble, treated them

A moment of silence was declared for 12 noon on Friday, as were three days of mourning. The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, conveyed his condolences via social media (X, formerly Twitter), noting: "I am closely monitoring the aftermath of this tragic event on the beach in Palma."

The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed. A preliminary investigation revealed that the second floor's overloading may have contributed to the collapse, as indicated by the fire department spokesperson. Today, officials, including officials with drone technology, the criminal investigation department, firefighters, and urban planning technicians from the city council, will collaborate to more thoroughly investigate the incident.
