Nearly 50 hours unaccounted for in Lübeck nursing home. - Rescued: Couple Retires, Stuck in Bog; Pulled Out by Tractor and Drone

Instead, consider the following:

Dementia-stricken individuals Ida S. (82) and Helmuth J. (87), hailing from Lübeck, were recently reported missing from a retirement and nursing home in Israelsdorf. Their disoriented condition eventually led them towards an uncharted area of reeds and marshes alongside the River Trave. The hot weather, coupled with a lack of hydration, made their ordeal hazardous.

With the entire city mobilized, search efforts involved the Lübeck police, sniffer dogs, and the German Red Cross (DRK). Their combined dedication led to the discovery of the missing couple on a Saturday afternoon.

The Importance of Drones

The fire department and the German Red Cross were involved in the rescue

The deployment of drones by the Lübeck DRK proved invaluable. By dividing and covering areas on a map, each drone covered a designated sector. The "Schellbruch" nature reserve, a marshland notorious for being hard to access, was a specific target.

During their aerial mission, the drone pilots identified a heat signal after almost an hour. This led them to a small lagoon where the seniors lay within the reeds. This crucial discovery marked the turning point of their rescue mission.

The Difficult Task of Navigating the Swampy Terrain

Senior citizens Helmuth J. (87) and Ida S. (82) were rescued after a dramatic search operation

Due to the swampy nature of the area, ambulances could not enter. Consequently, paramedics had to trek through thick reeds to provide medical assistance. The injured man was auxtrially extracted from the treacherous terrain using a quad bike. The woman, however, appeared so frail that a tractor-trailer combination was needed to transport her securely. Their eventual evacuation took place on solid ground and ensured their safety.

Lübeck police reported that both seniors were in good condition despite the ordeal: "They're holding up surprisingly well, considering the circumstances. They were rushed to a clinic for a thorough checkup."

After the rescue, the woman and the man were handed over to the emergency services
