Conflict in Ukraine - Reports claim a strike on a Russian nuclear missile monitoring system occurred.

Unconfirmed sources suggest that a Russian early warning system radar for detecting incoming nuclear missiles sustained damages in a Ukrainian drone strike. Evidence of the damage is circulating on Russian and Ukrainian media, the US Institute for the Study of War reported on Friday evening.

Russian ex-envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, expressed his views on the matter via social media on Saturday. He labelled the radar, which is vital for the strategic control of nuclear forces, as a "key element" that got damaged. Rogozin, now a senator in the Russian Federation Council, alleged the USA's involvement or at least prior knowledge of the attack and warned of the impending danger of a nuclear war. The Kremlin and the Russian Ministry of Defense remained silent on the issue.

The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday night, coinciding with a Ukrainian missile attack on a Russian army communication node in Alushta, Crimea. The Voronezh-DM type radar near Armavir is capable of detecting nuclear missiles from a distance of 6000 kilometers and monitors the airspace over Crimea and southwest Europe up to the Atlantic.

It is believed that a Ukrainian drone is responsible for the strike. The incident comes as Ukraine is in talks with its Western allies over the potential usage of their weapons against targets in Russia. Emer Northeast, a Norwegian military expert, cautioned against targeting such sensitive sites, especially during sensitive geopolitical times, via social media. According to him, "there are tons of targets in Russia that can be attacked with drones. And there are a handful of targets that you avoid, and this is one of them."
