Record number of illegal gambling machines seized in Colombia
In a further crackdown on illegal gambling in the country, Colombia's gambling regulator Coljuegos has launched its "largest-ever operation" to seize a large number of equipment and property used in illegal gambling establishments across the country.
The operation focuses on institutions in the municipalities of Atlantico, Magdalena, Cesar and Guajira. Coljuegos worked with local law enforcement to seize 778 items, including slot machines, gambling machines, televisions and technology equipment worth approximately 3 billion Colombian pesos ($756,000).
As the crackdown on illegal gambling comes, Colhugos hopes to strengthen law enforcement in the country. Just days ago, regulators announced they would crack down on illegal slots, which Colhugos said would deprive the government of at least 945 billion Colombian pesos ($238.14 million) in tax revenue.
General disregard for the law
Coljuegos President Marco Emilio Hincapié said in a statement that the operation targeted two main illegal gambling establishments in the city of Valledupar: Azar Games and Atlantis Games. They have avoided paying about 50 billion pesos ($12.5 million) in gambling license fees each year since opening. Hincapie stressed that these resources should be used to support the country's health system.
The operation resulted in seizures at 21 locations across four divisions and 14 people have been charged over alleged illegal gambling activities. Six of them are awaiting a judge's decision on their pretrial detention status. Additionally, authorities are seeking to seize a warehouse in Valledupal where illegal slot machines are manufactured.
Hincapié stressed the importance of the operation, saying it was the largest seizure of illegal gambling equipment since Coljuegos was founded. He commended Coljuegos personnel and law enforcement partners for their efforts in executing the operation. Furthermore, Hincapi stressed the regulator’s commitment to protecting the interests of Colombian citizens and upholding the rule of law.
Gambling regulations are increasing in Colombia
In 2023, Coljuegos achieved a major milestone for the legal gambling industry, with healthcare industry revenue growing 27.5%. This means approximately $200 million in revenue will be used to support Colombia’s health care system.
The main driver of growth was the casino and bingo hall, with sales of $17.3 million. This was followed by Raffles Lottery and related products with revenue of US$8.48 million. That number is a significant increase from last year, when Coljuegos generated $15.77 million in revenue for the health department.
This positive development highlights the critical role of the online gaming industry in supporting essential public services in Colombia. Taxes and donations from regulated gambling spaces fund various government regulatory agencies. These include state and local health funds and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation. This ensures that revenue from the online gaming industry improves the quality of healthcare services for Colombian citizens.
