'Real Housewives' stars Kim Zolciak and Kroy Biermann left penniless due to gambling habits
Reality star Kim Zolciak , 45, and her estranged husband Kroy Biermann , 38, have gone public with their divorce, exposing their dire financial situation. Bierman said in court documents this week that his wife bore the brunt of the abuse.
Biermann played eight seasons for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, initially at linebacker. Still, he's perhaps best known for his marriage to Zolciak, an original cast member of the Bravo reality television series "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," which premiered in 2008.
Biermann met Zolciak at a charity event in 2010, and the two soon began a relationship. The couple married in November 2011 at their home in Roswell, Georgia. Zolciak and Biermann have four children.
Bierman filed for divorce this year. The pair have since been embroiled in contentious divorce proceedings, with each making accusations against the other.
Zolciak’s Gaming Habits
Bierman has long claimed that his wife has a gambling problem.Reported in June, Biermann accused Zolciak of "spending a significant amount of time and marital funds gambling."
Zolciak's daughter Brielle Bierman took to Twitter in 2020 to tell a story she remembered from when she was 20 years old. Brielle reported that her mother dragged her to a North Carolina casino in the middle of the night.
About two hours after arriving at the casino - believed to be Harrah's Cherokee Valley - Brielle said her mother played for hours while she was forced to wait in the car because she was underage.
Zolciak has repeatedly denied to the media that she has a gambling problem, but Biermann stepped up his accusations this week with a new lawsuit.
Bierman said the couple was "financially destitute" in large part because of his wife's "reckless spending habits and love of online gambling."
According to Bierman, she has a tax lien on her home in Georgia for $1.1 million in unpaid taxes. The couple remains the subject of a lawsuit filed by Capital One over more than $150,000 in debt Zolciak incurred using a Saks credit card, he said.
Bierman admitted that he was partly responsible for the couple's dire financial situation.
Bierman said he remains the subject of a lawsuit filed against him by the Bahamas Casino in the Bahamas. The resort provided Bierman with a $100,000 credit for the trip in November 2021. Baha Mah's attorney claims Biermann "lost $52,500 gambling" during his stay and "never repaid" the money.
Toxic Home Environment
Due to financial circumstances, Bierman and Zolciak were forced to live under the same roof while their messy divorce continued.
“The toxins surrounding the matrimonial home are extremely detrimental to the mental and emotional health of the children,” Bierman’s attorneys wrote. “Zolciak called the police on the apartment at least twice to quell ridiculous arguments — once over Biermann would not let Zolciak enter the master bathroom while he was taking a shower."
Bierman asked the court to appoint a judicial officer to preside over the upcoming hearing "so that the issue of the sale of the matrimonial home can be heard and decided." Bierman claimed that Zolciak was delaying the matter in order to stay in the house.
"Zolciak has stated that she will not move and therefore will not cooperate with any attempt to sell the matrimonial home," Bierman's attorney continued. "Unfortunately, she was too self-centered to realize that her actions would Continue to have an impact on minor children.”
