Protests Occur - Protest against deportation center in Glückstadt

In Steinburg district, Glückstadt was filled with protests on Saturday as hundreds of people demanded the closure of the deportation detention center. Starting from the train station, they moved along the town center, finally reaching the detention facility. Estimating the attendees, organizers reported around 400 people were present, but the police only clarified later that around 300 people were present at the start of the demonstration.

Remaining peaceful throughout, the event did cause immediate concern for those involved. The "No deportation prison in Glückstadt and elsewhere!" campaign was the driving force behind this event. Participants were content with both the turnout and how the demonstration was conducted.

Beforehand, Frank Thurow representing the "No deportation prison in Glückstadt and elsewhere!" campaign shared that the primary purpose of their gathering was to convey a stern message against the existing deportation policy. He claimed that the deportation prison in Glückstadt has been intolerable for some time, but the situation worsened this year with increased staff shortages, punishments, self-harm incidents, and suicide attempts from detainees. He couldn't bear seeing people seeking safety and security being treated like criminals and detained in despicable conditions.

The deportation detention center, housing residents from Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, opened in mid-August 2021 by the Lower Elbe. Not long after, the Left Party in the Hamburg parliament raised concerns about the detention facility's conditions in February and called for its closure.
