The Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) predicts a steady increase in the number of first-year students in Saxony-Anhalt. From 2023 to 2035, the number of first-year students at state-funded universities and colleges in Saxony-Anhalt will rise from 7900 to 8700, as per the Tuesday announcement by KMK. Private universities, however, are only included in the nationwide figures.

The number of first-year students in the eastern German states, excluding Berlin, has been on the decline since 2019, with a total of 45,245 enrolled in state-run universities in 2022. There were 53,192 new students in 2019, and a figure of 52,300 is expected in 2035. In Saxony-Anhalt, the total number of first-year students was 9461 in 2019, compared to 10,000 in 2018. The forecast presents a rise in first-year student numbers in 2023, the first time since 2018.

For Germany as a whole, KMK anticipates an increase from approximately 397,600 students in 2023 to 440,700 in 2035. Including private universities, the number is set to rise from 477,900 to 526,200 in the same period. This represents an increase of 7500 students compared to the peak year of 2011.
