Scientists discover - Proboscis monkey boasts oversized nostrils for improved mating success.

The proboscis monkey, known for its odd, large nose that resembles a bulging penis, is regarded as the world's ugliest monkey. Scientists have recently found an intriguing purpose behind this uncomfortable feature.

Similar to sexual appearances in other species, it's all about... sex.

A group from the Australian National University studied the inner bony nasal cavity within the skull. They discovered several benefits of the enormous nose, particularly for male monkeys when it comes to attracting potential partners.

Dr. Katharine Balolia, head of the study, stated, "The capability to emit louder and deeper calls due to a longer and more extensive nasal cavity assists male monkeys in asserting their health and dominance." This aids in attracting females and discouraging other males. The more females a male monkey can draw, the more offspring he can create.

Nose as a tool for communication

Dr. Justyna Miszkiewicz, Dr. Anja Deppe and Dr. Katharine Balolia (from left) found out what is behind the enormous olfactory organ of the proboscis monkey

Proboscis monkeys, which are found on the island of Borneo, are considered one of the ugliest creatures on the planet. Balolia speculates that the jungle setting might explain the development of their enormous schnozz.

She explains, "Proboscis monkeys inhabit coastal mangroves and forested environments and frequently cannot see each other through the trees. As a result, forceful, nasal calls are crucial for communicating with one another."

Over time, females could have favorably chosen males with large noses for mating.
