Nuremberg Court of Region [(Nuremberg) District Court] - Prison term for Südstadt murderer.
### Life Term for Südstadt Killer
A man was convicted of murder and received a life sentence for taking the lives of two men following an argument in October 2022. Mert A. was found guilty by the 5th Grand Criminal Chamber of the Nuremberg-Fürth Regional Court. He fatally shot one man, Sahan Ö. (30), while the other survived with injuries. The court's verdict states that Mert A.'s actions make him less likely to be released early in the future.
Mert A. was on trial for murder and attempted murder in Nuremberg since December 2023. He argued that the shots were fired in self-defence as he had been threatened and insulted after the conflict.
Speaking at the trial, Mert A. expressed regret and apologised to the families of the victims, stating that he wished the shots had never been fired.
German authorities believed that the conflict was connected to professional disagreements between the two murdered individuals and Mert A., related to shisha tobacco and e-cigarettes. The motive could not be dissected during the trial, as conflicting evidence was provided by several witnesses who knew the men.
Mert A.'s legal team pushed for his acquittal, maintaining that the shooting occurred during a fracas triggered by their client being attacked. They persistently fought for his innocence until the verdict was issued.
After the shooting, Mert A. fled Germany and found refuge in Italy, where he was subsequently arrested by a special police unit at a hotel in Rimini in March 2023. He arrived in Germany alongside one of his victims, disguised as a Ukrainian refugee seeking asylum.
The combination of human lives' legal wrangling and troubling international incidents further muddies the circumstances surrounding these incidents.
