Schleswig-Holstein jails are overflowing. - Prison Admissions Halted The admissions process for prisons has been put on hold.
There's no laughing matter about this issue in the Schleswig-Holstein prisons.
What it translates to is that males who can't afford to pay off their fines will be unable to begin their alternative imprisonments in jail currently. The Ministry of Justice shared this notice on Thursday, as reported by Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitungsverlag (SHZ) earlier.
Record number of men in closed prison
Authorities had sought to postpone these admissions until mid-June if possible in April, owing to the packed conditions in the closed male prison. The info reveals that these levels are currently at an all-time high. What's more, the number of men in pre-trial detention has shot up significantly over the past three years.
Renovation delays and transfers add to congestion
"The construction work delay at Neumünster Prison and the obligatory transfer of prisoners from Flensburg Prison to other prisons due to renovations have worsened the occupancy rates," the ministry explained further.
They additionally mentioned that all other types of prison sentences and pre-trial detentions are proceeding as usual. It seems that overcrowding in pre-trial detention is beginning to ease too.
