Jude Bellingham

Highly talented Jude Bellingham joined Borussia Dortmund from Birmingham City in 2020 and demonstrated incredible growth with the Black and Yellows. He nearly secured the Bundesliga championship in 2023, but Dortmund fell short on the final matchday.

However, Bellingham's time in Dortmund proved exceptionally prosperous. Alongside winning the DFB Cup in 2021, he earned a spot in the national team and made the switch to Real Madrid that same summer for over 100 million euros as one of the most prized young talents.

Jude Bellingham played his way into Dortmund's hearts over three seasons

Bellingham competed in 132 games for Dortmund, notching 24 goals and setting up 25. This Saturday, he will go head-to-head against former teammate Jadon Sancho (24), with whom Bellingham still shares a special bond.

Nuri Sahin

Nuri Sahin (35), the only Dortmund star to return to Real Madrid post-transfer, started his professional career in 2005. The Turkish midfield orchestrator moved to Madrid in 2011, then spent two years and had a loan stint at Liverpool. Sahin eventually reunited with Dortmund, initially on loan, then permanently.

Sahin remained with his youth club until 2018 and holds another crucial role for the Black and Yellows: Since January, he has been assistant coach to BVB manager Edin Terzic (41).

Nuri Sahin featured in 274 matches for Dortmund, capturing the Bundesliga (2010/11) and the DFB Cup (2016/17) titles with the squad. In comparison, his ten appearances for Real only rendered a La Liga championship in 2011/12.

Achraf Hakimi

An assist from Achraf Hakimi was not enough for BVB points in the 4:3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen in February 2020

Much like Bellingham and Sahin, Achraf Hakimi (25) prospered at Borussia Dortmund. As a borrowed player from Real Madrid, the Moroccan defender joined Dortmund in 2018. Just two years later, he was back at his parent club – and at a significantly higher market value.

The right-back with attacking flair dealt with a not-so-pleasant clash with his former team: Dortmund knocked out Hakimi and his current employer Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semifinals.

Flavio Conceicao

Flavio Conceicao (38), a Brazilian international, joined Dortmund on loan from Real Madrid during the 2003/04 season. Throughout his 16-game stint, he scored one goal for the Black and Yellows.

In his 74 games for Real, he achieved greater success. Twice he won the Spanish championship (2001, 2003) and captured the Champions League (2002).

Reinier

Reinier has not yet found a proper soccer home

Another Real Madrid loan player, Reinier Jesus Carvalho (22), spent 2020 to 2022 at Dortmund. During his stay, he managed only 740 minutes of playing time over 39 appearances, dressed as a starter only four times, and accomplished a full 90-minute game once.

Since his return to Real Madrid, he's spent time on loan at FC Girona and Frosinone.

Interestingly, while Reinier has been a Real Madrid player since 2020, he has yet to make his professional debut for the club.

Christoph Metzelder as an expert for ARD in 2019

Christoph Metzelder (43) played for Borussia Dortmund from 2000 to 2007 before transferring as a free agent to Real Madrid. After three years in Spain, Metzelder signed with Schalke 04, Dortmund's primary rival.
