"I received a different account" - Potential error involving Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe and a certain game?
The top goaltender's future appeared set after the team was relegated: Schwäbe is undoubtedly above the 2nd division's level. Additionally, he has a contractual clause that allows him to leave for only €4 million. And Cologne had assured returnee Urbig, who signed a contract until 2026, that he would receive playing time - or at least a chance to compete for the position. It was believed that the team's future lay with him.
However, Schwäbe clearly wasn't informed about the competition. "I was told something else," said Cologne's goalkeeper when inquired after the last Bundesliga loss in Heidenheim, suggesting that sports head Christian Keller (45) had internally promised Schwäbe he would maintain his number one status.
Potential Miscommunications with Schwäbe?
Regardless, the team has three goalkeepers, which is one too many. A reserve role in League 2 is unacceptable for either Schwäbe or Urbig.
Thus, it's high time for Keller to speak honestly with his goalkeepers and disclose the team's plans for each individual as well as the prospects for Schwäbe and Urbig at Cologne.
Schwäbe, at a minimum, demands transparency. "The club must be straightforward: Which ones should stay? Which ones can stay? Who should go with us and who shouldn't? Then we'll see what develops," says the Cologne goalkeeper.
Urbig's status should be addresses openly and transparently as well. A year of being a backup keeper in the second division is not an ideal situation for him either...
