On a Wednesday morning, in the eastern part of Essen, a significant operation took place. The target: suspected benefit fraud and run-down houses. Six apartment buildings, situated between Frillendorfer Straße and Vorrathsstraße, received a visit from law enforcement. Over a hundred police officers participated in the inspection, which started at 6:30 and concluded at 8:30.

The authorities found that the properties were still inhabitable. Broken doors and doorbells were being substituted by the city of Essen.

At the end of the operation, the authorities revealed that 49 people, who were supposed to reside at these addresses, were nowhere to be found. The city of Essen is now pursuing approximately 3,000 euros in debt claims, and transfer payments had been temporarily haltered for individuals who were no longer listed as residents. Additionally, two individuals were identified as having received benefits for an extended period, which they were not eligible for. These funds will be recouped.

The police announced that one man, with an existing arrest warrant, had been located during the search. He was legally obligated to pay this claim and managed to avoid capture.
