Police Apprehend 10 Individuals Involved in $1 Million Chip Theft at Resorts World Genting Casino
Recently, Genting Malaysia faced theft at its Resorts World Genting property, causing them to search for nearly $1 million in stolen casino chips. The recent robbery has been under control, as surveillance footage and a police investigation helped identify and arrest around ten individuals suspected of involvement in the heist.
On October 28, the robbery took place at SkyCasino, a casino situated in Genting Highlands. The crime occurred when two individuals gained access to a room used for storing casino chips.
This discovery was made by an assistant manager, who, after reviewing CCTV footage, witnessed the thieves stealing chips from the casino tables. The incident occurred around 7 am, and the assistant manager reported it later that day, around 6 pm.
Rumors are circulating that an inside job may be linked to the theft due to the perpetrators' familiarity with the casino's layout and the specific quantity of chips stolen. The swift execution of the crime also hints at insider knowledge of casino operations.
As a response, police caught ten people in connection to the robbery. Nonetheless, the authorities haven't revealed the specific names or roles of these individuals. Two of them were released, but their involvement in the crime is still unclear.
The arrests reportedly occurred in various locations, but the chips haven't been recovered yet. To prevent the stolen chips from being used, SkyCasino patrons will need to register when they visit and exchange chips. Croupiers will also be on the lookout for any of the stolen chips.
Meanwhile, drivers heading to Genting Highlands may soon have to pay a new, one-time fee when entering the area. According to a report from Malaysia's Sin Chew Daily news outlet, a new toll system may be in place. Lingkaran Cekap, a subsidiary of Genting Malaysia, is expected to manage the toll. It has privately maintained the road since the 1960s. At least two toll stations will likely be set up, affecting drivers from Kuala Lumpur and Batang Kali. The toll amount and starting date remain unknown.
Curiously, the state government was unaware of these plans. The government is having ongoing discussions with Genting to reveal more information about the toll system in the upcoming weeks.
