Poker legend Phil Hellmuth wins 17th WSOP bracelet

In one of the biggest moments of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) so far, poker legend Phil Hellmuth won his 17th tournament bracelet on Sunday, moving him into his closest rival on the all-time bracelet list The gap between them is even greater. (Phil Ivey, Johnny Chan and the late Doyle Brunson each had 10.)

Hellmuth emerged victorious from a field of 642 entrants in the largest $10,000 Super Turbo Bounty No Limit Hold'em event with a win rate of 53%, but he found himself in the middle of the pack at the final table. There, he chased Los Angeles player Chris Savage, who had 40 percent of the chips after passing Lawrence Brandt in 10th place. During the roller-coaster ride, Hellmuth was down to two big blinds at one point ($60,000 at the 15,000/30,000 level).

Hellmuth turned the tables when his pocket aces moved Ivey into sixth place with King-10 and $133,461. Next is Los Angeles player Rick Savage, followed by Brazilian player Kelvin Kerber and German player Tom Kunze.

That puts Justin Zaki in contention for a first-place helmet and bracelet worth $803,818. Hellmuth defeated his Florida opponent in a heads-up match with just one hand, in which Hellmuth flopped two pair and called Zaki's all-in, creating a full house on the turn. Zaki won $496,801.

Since winning his first Main Event in 1989, Hellmuth has won WSOP bracelets in five different decades. His last was in 2021.

"This is the first year of my career where all the great players are calling me 'the great' or 'the greatest,'" he told PokerNews. "Shawn Deeb is one of the greatest players in the world. He finally got it and gave me compliments like, 'You're the best player in the tournament.'"
