The government is facing a fresh financial issue with their budget. - Pistorius demands an additional 3.8 billion for Ukraine promptly.

This year, the traffic light government has dished out €7.1 billion worth of military assistance to Kiev. The funds are being used to pay for Ukrainian purchases of military equipment directly from industries and to cover the expenses of the Bundeswehr's handovers of arms to the Ukrainian military.

However, this amount is falling short - Ukraine desperately needs more support to avoid being overrun by the Russian invasion. Almost all of the allocated cash has already been spent, leaving just €300 million for buying new weapons or ammunition.

Last week, Pistorius met with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (65, SPD) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (45, FDP) to discuss the matter. They discussed ways to make up for the remaining budget.

The remaining unbudgeted expenditure will be submitted to parliament for approval in June, along with counter-financing.

Lindner refuses to incur further debt

Christian Lindner's Ministry of Finance has approved the proposal. "Germany cannot afford to let down Ukraine's defense. If possible, we should equip them with more weapons this year," sources at the ministry said. They think that suspending the debt brake is unnecessary for this mission. "As long as we can all agree in the government, we'll find ways to cover the costs during the current financial year."

But this action will widen the hole in the federal budget even further....
