Phish after U2's Las Vegas Arena residency
The second musical act at the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas will be Phish. The four-piece jam band, which has captivated the Fulser Festival crowd, will perform four consecutive shows at the world-famous concert hall behind the Venetian from April 18 to 21. They tracked U2's opening residency.
Each night will feature a "completely unique setlist and visuals," according to a press release from Sphere Entertainment. However, all Phishheads know that in the 40 years since they formed in Burlington, Vermont, their improv idols have never performed the same show twice.
"From the moment we first heard about Sphere and its potential, we figured out how to bring our show to this amazing canvas," said Trey Anas, the band's guitarist and vocalist Trey Anastasio said in a press release. “We’re excited to bring Phish fans this completely unique experience.”
Big unanswered questions
Ultimately, Phish's booking was a limited engagement, as a press release from the Sphere ruled out the possibility of any longer stay, stating that these would be "the only shows Phish performs at the venue in 2024."
That leaves one big question unanswered: who will follow U2 with its next official, fully produced residency. The Eagles, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Paul McCartney and Bon Jovi have all been mentioned as possible candidates in reports citing unnamed sources. Although the Styles and Eagles are the favorites, neither team has yet signed as both teams are managed by Irving Azoff's Full Stop Management, which also manages With U2, Azoff reportedly serves as a booking consultant for Sphere.
It's believed U2's unprecedented offer to serve as Sphere's guinea pig - reportedly 90 per cent of ticket sales plus $10 million in production funding - could undermine Sphere's bargaining power, as similarly popular acts would feel That way, to get similar conditions. .
Scope Phishing
Although Phish was not managed by Azoff, the band's good relationship with MSG Entertainment and the accompanying lack of multi-million dollar visual production ensured that the terms were inconsistent with those of U2.
Phish had a sold-out seven-night run at New York's similarly-sized Madison Square Garden last summer and will return to the venue for another series on December 28-31. Like the Sphere, the garden is owned by MSG Entertainment.
Anastasio was also the first to test the Sphere immersive audio system, performing a solo acoustic show in August 2022 at New York’s Beacon Theater (also owned by MSG Entertainment).
According to a press release, the "ticket request period" for Sphere's limited-attendance event is now open at tickets.phish.com and runs through Monday, December 11. All remaining tickets will go on sale to the public on Friday 15 December and can be purchased via the same website.
