Philadelphia Eagles' tight end Dallas Goedert set to miss several matches.
On Sunday during the Philadelphia Eagles' win against the Dallas Cowboys with a score of 28-23, tight end Dallas Goedert sustained a broken right forearm. The injury occurred in the third quarter after Goedert caught a 28-yard pass and was tackled by Cowboy safety Markquese Bell. Bell landed on Goedert's forearm as they both went out of bounds.
Goedert departed the game and didn't come back. X-rays confirmed the unfortunate event, and he had further imaging on Monday to assess the damage. The Eagles are currently enjoying the best record in the NFL with an 8-1 standing. Conveniently, a bye week is right around the corner, where they will be joined by multiple other starters who are dealing with injuries, including quarterback Jalen Hurts (knee).
The star tight end, Goedert, missed five games last season because of a shoulder injury. However, the outstanding performance of the team wasn't affected: they won five games while their star player was absent. Goedert returned for a match against the Cowboys in Week 16 before the Christmas Eve holiday.
There was some good news for the Eagles - Goedert's injury won't end his season. Dr. David Chao, a former NFL team physician, believes Goedert will spend some time on the Injured Reserve List. He added that the injury shouldn't pose any lasting detrimental effect and that the player will be ready to join his team late in the season, including the playoffs.
Broken forearms typically take anywhere from three to six months to heal fully. Although patients are usually given the green light to resume regular activities after approximately six weeks, it might be different for a professional athlete of Goedert's caliber. He hopes to get back in the game in early December.
In front of his current injury, Goedert accumulated 38 catches, amassing 410 yards and two touchdowns. Goedert also has an average of 10.8 yards per catch, which ranks him third among the Eagles' statistics for receptions, yards, and receiving touchdowns.
Goedert debuted for the Eagles as a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Playing for South Dakota State as a college star, the Eagles recognized his talent and selected him. Goedert has scored 21 touchdowns in 78 games since joining the Eagles.
The Eagles have three other veteran tight ends available. Jack Stoll, from Nebraska, is the current backup who took Goedert's position last season. Stoll played in the Dallas Cowboys match. Also, second-year tight end Grant Calcaterra from SMU is currently on the active roster but is suffering from a concussion. He should be cleared when the Eagles return after their bye week. Additionally, the Eagles brought in Albert Okwuegbunam via trade with the Denver Broncos to bolster their depth. Okwuegbunam managed to score four touchdowns in 26 games with the Broncos.
The Eagles are one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl, with odds of +550. The only team with better chances are the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs at +475. Similarly, the Eagles are the favorites to win the NFC Championship at +225 and are hopeful about becoming the first team to win back-to-back divisional titles since 2004. They have -550 odds to win the NFC East, while their next competitor, the Cowboys, only have +370 odds. According to Upshot, the Eagles have a 19% chance of winning the Super Bowl but a 65% chance of receiving a first-round playoff bye.
Following their bye week, the Eagles have five challenging games. Each opponent made it through to the playoffs last season, including the Chiefs (Week 11), Bills (Week 12), 49ers (Week 13), and Cowboys (Week 14), and the Seattle Seahawks (Week 15). The Eagles' final three games are against the weakest teams in the NFC. The New York Giants, who recently lost quarterback Daniel Jones to a season-ending ACL injury, will play the Eagles twice - a Christmas Day match in Week 16 and again in the season's finale in Week 18. They also battle the Cardinals, who only have one victory so far in Week 17.
