Philadelphia 76ers swingman Kelly Oubre hit by car, out indefinitely
Philadelphia 76ers shooting guard/small forward Kelly Oubre is out indefinitely after being hit by a car in a hit-and-run accident in downtown Philadelphia on Saturday.
Oubre lives in the downtown area. He was on his way home Saturday night when he was hit by a car as he tried to cross the intersection of Broad and Locust streets. Witnesses said a silver car hit Oubre and fled the scene.
X-ray examination showed that Oubre suffered multiple rib fractures and injuries to his hip and right leg. He was released from Jefferson Hospital on Saturday.
The 76ers said Oubre will miss an extended period of time as he recovers from the accident. They hope he can return before the end of the season.
Oubre strengthened after Harden trade
The 76ers signed Oubre to a one-year contract in September at the veteran's minimum. This season he averaged 16.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. He shot a career-high 50% from the field and 37.8% from three-point range.
Oubre played 8 games for the 76ers, starting 5 of them. The 76ers with Oubre playing have a record of 7 wins and 1 loss. He is the team's fourth leading scorer and proved to be a valuable addition following James Harden's transfer.
“Kelly is very matter-of-fact,” head coach Nick Nurse said.“After he came in, he played hard, trained hard, and has a likeable personality.”
Oubre grew up in New Orleans, but his family was displaced after Hurricane Katrina and moved to Texas. Oubre played one season with the Kansas Jayhawks before turning pro.
Oubre was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks with the 15th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, who later traded him to the Washington Wizards. He also played for the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors and Hornets before joining the 76ers this season.
Last season, Oubre averaged 20.3 points per game with the Charlotte Hornets, a career high. He missed more than seven weeks in January after tearing ligaments in his left hand and requiring surgery.
Tyrese Maxey dedicates 50-point game to Oubre
The 76ers rank first in the league with a record of 8 wins and 1 loss. Aside from a one-point loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in the season opener, the 76ers have won five straight games by double digits in eight games.
The 76ers extended their winning streak to eight in a row with a 137-126 win over the Indiana Pacers in a shootout on Sunday.
Point guard Tyrese Maxey scored a career-high 50 points against the Pacers. He contributed 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks to the victory. He made 20 of 32 shots from the field, including 7 of 11 from three-point range and 3 of 3 from the free throw line.
This has nothing to do with me,” Maxey told reporters after the game.“This is all Kelly Oubre. We pray for him. I love my friends. I just met him but I love him. I wish him a speedy recovery. "
"I'm sure Tyrese thought about today's game, we all did," center Joel Embiid said. "We just want Kelly to recover slowly and know that we have his back. We need him because he's a big part of who we are. We missed him tonight, but he should take his time."
Maxey is the 76ers' second-leading scorer, behind Embiid (32.4 points per game), who won the NBA MVP last season. Maxey averaged 28.6 points per game this season and shot 50.5% from the field.
“Coach Nurse just told me to be very aggressive,” Maxey told The Athletic last week. "He would get really angry with me when I refused to shoot, or when the ball dropped and I didn't shoot, or he felt like I was being passive and not getting into the line of fire."
Betting on the 76ers without Harden
The Sixers have been on a hot streak since trading disgruntled shooting guard James Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers. Meanwhile, the Clippers have lost five straight games since Harden took over.
Harden was dissatisfied with the 76ers organization, especially general manager Daryl Morey, after not being traded this offseason. After the start of the season, Morey finally signed with the Clippers.
The 76ers are relieved that the Harden drama is a thing of the past and they can now focus on winning games under their new head coach.
After another disappointing playoff exit last year, the 76ers fired Doc Rivers. They hired a nurse to replace Rivers. Nurse won a championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019, but the team fired him after last season.
“We have a fun team,” Nurse said.
New coach, new system, a lot of new guys," Embiid added."Just trying to get everyone up to speed and see what we can do. "
The 76ers have the best betting record in the NBA at 8-1.
The Boston Celtics are the consensus favorite to win the Atlantic Division at -320. The 76ers are their closest competitor at +270.
The Celtics (+150) and Milwaukee Bucks (+155) are the two biggest betting favorites to win the Eastern Conference this season. The Sixers are the third-best team in the East at +600.
After several offseason acquisitions, the Celtics and Bucks are the favorites to win the 2023-24 NBA Championship. The Celtics are the absolute favorite with odds of +370, and the Bucks are the second favorite with odds of +425, along with the defending champion Denver Nuggets. The 76ers are ranked sixth, with odds of winning +1400.
