An Australian revolution in the healthcare sector. - Pharmacists are authorized to provide prescriptions in this region.

In a pilot project known as "Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice," approximately 300 pharmacists have finished a year-long training program and are now eligible to provide additional pharmaceutical services. Despite this development, not everyone is impressed; the general practitioner association is displeased because they are no longer privy to the medicine regimens and dosages of their patients. Under this project, pharmacists are now authorized to manage, modify, and replace prescriptions, as well as dispense follow-up medication. They can also issue prescriptions for several common ailments and provide services related to health and wellness and medication for various common conditions. According to the pharmaceutical journal "Pharmazeutische Zeitung," these services include:

  • Reflux and reflux disease
  • Acute nausea and vomiting
  • Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis
  • Herpes zoster (shingles)
  • Mild-to-moderate dermatitis
  • Mild-to-moderate acne
  • Acute wound treatment
  • Acute otitis media (middle ear infection)
  • Acute pain and inflammation of the musculoskeletal system
  • Smoking cessation
  • Hormonal contraception
  • Oral health
  • Health while traveling
  • Treatment of overweight and obesity

Furthermore, there are several prescriptions linked to programs designed to manage chronic illnesses:

  • Cardiovascular disease risk reduction program for type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia
  • Program to enhance asthma symptoms (and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction)
  • Program to monitor chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
