Pfft, pfft, passage: Cannabis scores two big wins in Vegas this week

Lawmakers in Las Vegas are giving marijuana users two great excuses to celebrate this week. Nevada regulators have conditionally approved the first two cannabis consumption lounges in Las Vegas. Additionally, the Las Vegas City Council passed an ordinance making it more difficult to operate fake pharmacies.

On Tuesday, Planet 13 and Thrive Cannabis Marketplace, two licensed dispensaries currently operating directly on the Las Vegas Strip, received conditional permission from the Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB) to establish consumption lounges.

Neither of the lounges has a set opening date, although Thrive plans to open the lounge at 2975 S. Sammy Davis Drive and hopes to do so before the MJ Biz Con cannabis business conference in late November.

Clark County must also approve a zoning review for structural changes to Planet 13 as the dispensary considers several options for the lounge, including a nightclub that would serve marijuana instead of alcohol. This approval may take several months. Additionally, all new lounges must pass a final inspection by the CCB upon completion of construction.

Across the state, 40 marijuana applicants are expected to receive conditional licenses in the coming months.

Why Breakrooms Are Important

Although marijuana was legalized for recreational use in 2017 and the first recreational dispensaries opened a year later, various laws still prohibit smoking or vaping on the street, in hotel rooms or in cars.

Cannabis lounges, also known as cannabis cafes, provide users with a legal and safe place to smoke or vape while providing a social experience comparable to a cigar bar. Nevada lawmakers legalized it in 2019, but waiting for the red tape is frustrating.

Technically, the Vegas Valley has had a cannabis lounge since 2019, but that's just because there was a gap. The Vegas Tasting Room opened in 2019 at the NuWu Cannabis Market dispensary, located five miles north of the Las Vegas Strip. He bypassed government approval because he was on tribal land.

Second Green Cannabis Light

The nascent legal industry scored its second victory this week when the Las Vegas City Council passed a proposed ordinance targeting fake marijuana dispensaries on Wednesday.

These dispensaries are trying to pass off marijuana as marijuana. Although the two are the same plant, marijuana contains more than 0.03% THC, the compound that gets people high. Marijuana only contains CBD, but that’s not the case. Even worse, it may contain synthetic marijuana.

"You walk in, there's flowers in the jar, there's strict security, they're charging the same price, but there's no THC content listed on the product," said Layke Martin of the Nevada Cannabis Association.

Martin said that because of a loophole in the 2019 farm law that allows unlicensed dispensaries to sell marijuana, these stores are defrauding unsuspecting customers and possibly even harming them.

"You can't tell what's in their product," she said.

The new rules require stores to post a foot-tall sign at the entrance stating, "This location is not licensed to sell marijuana." Other indoor signage must display the actual THC content of various products sold at licensed locations. by the laboratory.

By law, the THC content must be less than 0.03%.

Marijuana and marijuana are the same plant but contain different proportions of the psychoactive compound THC.
