Pete Rose Advises Alabama Football Players on Avoiding Sports Betting

Nick Saban, the renowned Alabama football coach, is no stranger to bringing in experts who've achieved great success to inspire his team. With sports betting becoming a significant issue leading up to the NCAA Division 1 football season, Coach Saban invited Pete Rose to Tuscaloosa during the preseason to speak with the student-athletes.

A two-time Paul Bryant Award winner and seven-time national champion, Saban's reputation precedes him. As per tradition, he called upon several friends who had valuable insights into winning to address his team. This year, he reached out to Pete Rose, a former baseball player who had a notorious run-in with sports betting.

Rose was banned from Major League Baseball in 1989 after an investigation found that he placed bets with bookies on games he played and managed with the Cincinnati Reds. Back then, single-game sports betting was illegal in all states except Nevada. In his 2004 memoir, "My Prison Without Bars," Rose admitted to gambling on Reds games when he was a player and a team manager.

Despite leading the league in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), and singles (3,215), Rose has yet to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame due to his lifetime ban imposed by MLB. He was excluded from the Hall of Fame ballots, which are managed by the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA). The BBWAA will not consider a player for Cooperstown if they've been banned by MLB.

Nick Saban's Alabama football team has been dominating college football since 2009, winning six national championships under his leadership. The team has consistently finished the postseason No. 1 in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and College Football Playoff rankings. Alabama is currently ranked No. 3 in the preseason AFCA Coaches poll behind Georgia and Michigan.

Several of Saban's players aspire to have a career in the NFL. Speaking to the media after Rose's visit to Tuscaloosa, Saban shared that Rose cautioned the players against engaging in sports betting, emphasizing that it could negatively impact their careers. The players were told to avoid betting, regardless of its legality.

"He said he made a mistake, he should have never done it, and he spoke about winning," Saban said. "He believed in his players, trusted his players, and loved his players. He offered important insights on the consequences of breaking team and league rules."

Saban added that this year's invited speakers were addressing the most pressing issues facing college football players in 2023, including betting, drugs, and alcohol. The coach intends to educate his players on the positive and negative outcomes of their actions, preventing them from experiencing any negative consequences that might taint their brand.
