Pete Alonso Eyeing Third Home Run Derby Championship in 2023

Pete Alonso, the New York Mets' powerhouse, is the favorite to take home the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby title according to DraftKings, with odds of +320. Alonso has won this competition before, in 2019 and 2021.

The runner-up favorite is Vladimir Guerrero Jr. from the Blue Jays at +370.

The much-loved event will take place during the All-Star Game celebrations at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Monday night.

2023 Home Run Derby Odds

  • Pete Alonso +320
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. +370
  • Julio Rodriguez +450
  • Luis Robert +500
  • Adolis Garcia +700
  • Mookie Betts +1000
  • Randy Arozarena +1100
  • Adley Rutschman +1700

The 2022 Home Run Derby saw Juan Soto edge out Julio Rodriguez, with the latter not participating this year after moving to the Padres.

The current home run leaders in both the American League (Shohei Ohtani, 32 homers) and the National League (Matt Olson, 29 homers) won't be present in this year's contest.

#1 Luis Robert Jr. vs #8 Adley Rutschman

Following the current home run totals as of July 4, the first-round matchups have been set.

Luis Robert Jr., a Chicago White Sox outfielder, is enjoying a fantastic season with a joint third-place overall standing in MLB with 26 home runs. This earned him the top seed.

With a $500 slugging chance, Robert is also -230 odds to win the first round against Adley Rutschman.

The Baltimore Orioles' catcher, in his second season, smashed 13 homers in 113 games last year, and 12 in just 86 this year. As the #8 seed, Rutschman boasts +190 payout odds to upset Robert in the initial face-off. Rutschman's long shot odds of winning the entire Home Run Derby are +1700.

#2 Pete Alonso vs #7 Julio Rodriguez

This first-round encounter is a highly anticipated rematch of the Home Run Derby last year between Pete Alonso and Julio Rodriguez.

A two-time Home Run Derby champ, Alonso is favored at +320 odds for the derby, while Rodriguez is fourth favourite at +450. Alonso is also the favorite at -150 odds to win the opening round match against Rodriguez.

Alonso boasts 26 home runs this season, tied with Shohei Ohtani and Matt Olson for the league lead. He recently returned from a wrist injury, but continues to swing for the fences.

Rodriguez, who's a homegrown Seattle Mariners star, reached the finals last year and still impressed the crowd with his performance. His 13 homers in 87 games this season earned him the #7 seed.

Playing in his home stadium provides an extra edge for Rodriguez, a +450 odds bet for winning the entire Home Run Derby.

#3 Mookie Betts vs #6 Vlad Guerrero Jr.

Mookie Betts has 26 home runs so far with the LA Dodgers this season, edging closer to his personal best record of 35 homers in 2021. He's considered a longshot in the Home Run Derby, sitting at +1000 odds. Contrastingly, Guerrero is a popular contender, with +370 odds.

Mookie Betts has +170 odds of winning the opening round against Guerrero, who also blasted 13 homers between the start of the season and the All-Star Break.

Both players are equally matched, but Guerrero is a heavy favorite at -205 odds to claim the first-round victory.

#4 Adolis Garcia vs #5 Randy Arozarena

In a meeting between two Cuban baseball stars, Adolis Garcia and Randy Arozarena, the first-round probabilities will make for an exciting match.

Adolis Garcia sits at -145 odds to win against Arozarena with +120 odds. Each player has 26 total homers this season, but Garcia's the #4 seed while Arozarena's the #5 seed reflects slightly lower expectations for his performance.

Given the closeness in their statistics, this match is tough to call, but the support appears to favor Garcia marginally.

Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis Garcia smashed 23 homers this year, but his real claim to fame is his league-leading 75 RBIs. Garcia is a top contender for the next round at -145 odds, and his chances of winning the derby are +700.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena, who has 16 homers in 88 games, is the underdog in this competition against Garcia. Arozarena, who hit 20 long balls in each of the previous two seasons, is not one to be counted out. He has +120 odds of defeating his fellow Cuban. If you're feeling lucky, you can bet on Arozarena to win the entire event at +1100 odds.
