Analyzing drugs found in this case - Pepper spray sets off poison gas alert in Singen.
In the southern part of Baden-Württemberg, a city went into a state of emergency on Thursday. The reason behind this was the detection of a strong gas odour in an underground parking lot on Ekkehardtraße and a nearby law firm. Over two dozen residents complained of respiratory irritation. Police officers, armed and wearing gas masks, surrounded the area. Warning apps instructed people to seal their windows and doors.
During this time, firefighters and emergency services in NBC protective suits were deployed, while the police detained two men (ages 21 and 36) suspected of spraying irritant gas with masks on, presumably at the law firm.
That evening, measurements revealed the absence of toxic substances in the air, prompting the lifting of the lockdown. Nevertheless, the cause of the odour and the complaints remained unclear.
The police have since conducted air sample analyses, which have provided a relief - the mystery chemical identified was a substance commonly found in commercially available pepper spray. This suggests that the six people reported injured are unlikely to suffer any long-term effects.
The connection between the two incidents and the motive of the detained men are still under investigation.
