Pennsylvania Harness Racer Sustains Injury, Racehorse Euthanized

On a Saturday, a harness racing incident took place at Pennsylvania's Hollywood Casino at The Meadows, where a harness-racing driver, Mike Wilder, was injured. During a race at North Strabane Township, his horse was in second place but slowed down unexpectedly. The wheels of the two carts, called sulkies, locked, causing the horse to lose control and Wilder to be thrown off the cart onto the track. Wilder passed out after the impact and had to be airlifted to the hospital.

No information regarding the extent of Wilder's injuries was available at the time. However, he was discharged from the hospital on Monday. Wilder's wife, Heather, thanked everyone for their concern and well wishes and mentioned they were grateful to work with their "amazing animals" who they consider part of their family.

Another race horse suffered severe injuries; it had to be euthanized, as reported by KDKA, the Pennsylvania TV station. However, no other horses were injured in this accident. The drivers Hunter Myers and Dave Palone were also involved in the accident but remained unharmed. They resumed racing on Saturday.

A trainer, Chuck Mull, described the situation as "a very heartbreaking thing," stating that the community was supportive. "Every horseman feels for each other when that has to happen...We’re all in this together, you know, you’re working with friends, [and] family."

The track has a five-eighths of a mile oval and harness races typically last a mile with the race beginning on a backstretch and going through three turns, according to online resources.

Gaming and Leisure Properties own and operate The Meadows and Penn Entertainment handles the operations. Penn National, the oldest gaming operator in Pennsylvania, acquired Pinnacle Entertainment in 2018 which enabled them to take over The Meadows. The tracks name was changed to Hollywood Casino at The Meadows in 2021.

The venue, which includes a racing track and a casino, opened in 1963 and the casino in 2007. The complex is situated approximately 25 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
