Pennsylvania bookies win $444.5 million in November, sports betting hits record
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported gaming revenue of more than $444.4 million in November, down nearly 2% year over year.
Gross gaming revenue (GGR) fell 1.7% last month, mainly due to poor monthly performance from gaming operators.
Despite accepting more than $900 million in bets for the first time and setting a monthly record with $934.1 million in bets, sportsbooks retained just $12.8 million. Sports betting revenue is down 76% compared to November 2022, when $52.8 million was won from bettors.
Bettors did a great job with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, winning all three games in November. The Pittsburgh Steelers also went 3-1 this month.
Pennsylvania's 17 brick-and-mortar casinos offset some of the sports betting losses, with retail slot machine winnings of approximately $189.7 million, a 2% premium over the previous year, and table game winnings of $77.8 million, down 1.7%. Total individual GGR was approximately $267.6 million, an increase of 1%, or $2.8 million, from November 2022.
Pennsylvania’s November GGR from casinos, sports betting, iGaming, truck stop slot machines and fantasy sports was $444.4 million, ranking third in U.S. monthly gaming revenue.New Jersey leads Pennsylvania with $482.4 million. Nevada has not yet released data for November, but statewide gaming revenue is expected to top $1.3 billion.
iGaming continues to grow
As the state's traditional casinos continue to add GGR, their online casino platforms continue to attract new players and expand internet gaming.
Interactive slot machines won $109.3 million in November 2023, a 26% increase from November last year. Online table games won $46.4 million, up nearly 18 percent, while online poker rake increased by about $2.3 million.
iGaming consolidated revenue was $158 million, up 23% from November 2022, and up over $29.4 million, up 2% from October 2023.
Penn Entertainment, a leader in iGaming, operates four casinos in the Keystone State, including Hollywood Casino at Penn National Raceway, Hollywood Casino at York, Hollywood Casino at the Meadows and Hollywood Casino at Morgantown. The Hollywood Casino platform recently transitioned to the company's digital sports betting and iGaming network ESPN Bet, which generated over $61.1 million in Internet GGR revenue.
Boyd Gaming's iGaming business in partnership with FanDuel through its Valley Forge Casino Resort ranked second with $41.1 million. FanDuel is a leader in sports betting, accepting more than $384 million in bets last month on retail and online sportsbooks and winning $8.4 million.
Revenue from truck stop slot machines (technically video game terminals) fell about 4% to $3.4 million. Fantasy sports fees totaled $2.5 million, up 2%.
Wind Creek Narrows Parx Lead
Parx Casino in North Philadelphia has been a leader in Pennsylvania's gaming industry for months. As one of only two fully smoke-free casinos in the Commonwealth (the other being sister satellite casino Parx Casino Shippensburg), Parx Philly maintained its top status in November. But Wind Creek was getting closer.
Parx won $29.7 million on his personal slot machines last month. Wind Creek ranked second with $22.8 million in marina revenue.
Wind Creek also won $20.9 million at the table. Parx's table came in second with $15.6 million.
Parx's monthly retail GGR is $45.39 million. Wind Creek's retail revenue totaled $43.74 million.
