Pamela Anderson Takes on the Role of a Las Vegas Showgirl in a Promising Indie Thriller

Pamela Anderson is ready to revive both her acting career and the essence of a Las Vegas showgirl in a sinister indie movie.

In "The Last Showgirl," filmed over the past couple of years in Las Vegas, this former "Baywatch" actress portrays a Las Vegas showgirl who is compelled to redefine her life when the production show she performs in comes to a close after 30 years.

"The Last Showgirl" serves as Anderson's initial feature film since "Alone at Night" in 2022. Directed by Gia Copolla, a descendant of five-time Oscar winner Francis Ford Coppola, the grandchild of Sofia Coppola (who received the 2004 Best Original Screenplay Oscar for "Lost in Translation"), and the cousin of Nicolas Cage (who won the 1996 Best Actor Oscar for "Leaving Las Vegas").

The film's official description seems just as dark as "Leaving Las Vegas." In this movie, Anderson, now in her 50s, battles not only a terminated career but also a disgruntled grown-up daughter who has been overshadowed by her showgirl family during her childhood.

In the first promotional image, Anderson's character seems to be considering suicide on the roof of a casino resort west of the Bellagio, possibly the Palms or Rio.

Along with Andrea Riseborough, Owen Wilson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bruce Dern, and Riley Keough, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, and Billie Lourd are among the cast members.

No Longer a Star

"The Last Showgirl" is the first film to concentrate on the challenges experienced by hundreds of former Las Vegas showgirls, who lost their footing both professionally and personally after the final two showgirl production shows on the Strip closed - "Folie Bergere" at the Tropicana in 2009, after 50 years, and "Jubilee!" at Bally's in 2016, after 35 years.

Ever since then, although there is a widespread belief, Las Vegas has been without showgirls. The present showgirls you see strolling along the sidewalks of the Las Vegas Strip are either paid models or street performers who ask for tips in exchange for taking pictures.

Anderson's film is aiming for distribution at Cannes, from May 14th to 25th.
