Fireworks hurled and forbidden chants voiced. - Over 6,000 people demonstrate against Israel in Berlin.
In the early afternoon, the atmosphere was quiet, but by the evening, tensions began to rise. Fireworks went off, and prohibited slogans were screamed at. Some arrests were made.
In preparation for the event, which started at 3 pm at Oranienplatz, certain things were forbidden: calls for violence, insulting language directed at ethnic or religious groups, and statements that promoted Israel's destruction as a state.
Officials estimate that around 6,200 people participated in the protest, organized by an individual. Only 2,000 had been previously registered.
On various internet platforms, invitations to the demonstration were posted in German, English, and Arabic. These read: "On Nakba Day, no ban, no persecution, no repression can prevent us from demanding justice and liberation. We won't be free until Palestine is free." On Nakba Remembrance Day on May 15, Palestinians commemorate the displacement and expulsion of hundreds of thousands of people during the first Middle East war in 1948, when the state of Israel was established.
The demonstration had to be repeatedly interrupted during the march due to the shouting of prohibited slogans and the throwing of pyrotechnics at police officers. Bottles were also hurled. Temporary arrests were made.
Prohibited slogans
"This is how the day of remembrance is misused."
Yet, it was unexpected that so few police officers were present despite the anticipated massive demonstration. As explained by the officer, a single misleading arrest could spark an avalanche of issues.
The demonstration was terminated by the organizers around 7 pm.
